Miss Sophia Vane, a wallflower of sorts, makes an unlikely match when she weds Nathaniel Ellison, the rich and wary Duke of Scarsdale. What starts with an unexpected friendship soon blooms into a fiery passion. But a betrayal plunges Sophia into the thorny world of London Society and entangles her in a labyrinth of manipulation and jealousy that will test the strength of her marriage. Behind her husband’s sudden icy facade, Sophia believes dwells the caring, passionate man she loves. My Seductive Innocent A Once Upon A Rogue Novel Book 2 edition by Julie Johnstone Romance eBooks

My Seductive Innocent has a plot that would be improbable. A Duke of the realm marries a tavern maiden. This was a a story that had some strange twists beyond the duke/commoner marriage and these scenes were also unbelievable. Sometimes I do not mind suspending belief for a story especially one that feels almost like a fairytale. This didn’t.

Nathan the Duke of Scarsdale is a man very much alone. He has friends but emotionally he is reserved and controlled. He has had a terrible childhood and he goes about life honorably but also somewhat aloof. His life though is endangered and he is saved by a most unexpected person, Sophia a tavern worker. Nathan feels honor bound to take care of Sophia and her brother who live under the thumb of a cruel father. He wants to marry her despite the fact that she is a commoner. He has plans to wed her and basically leave her in the country after they marry.

Sophia at first does not want to marry Nathan but she wants her brother in a safe environment and she begins to see a kinder softer Nathan. She has a big heart and it encompasses Nathan. She intuitively knows he has the ability to love deeply.

One irritating part of this novel is how stubborn both of these leads are. Nathan ignores good advice and puts himself in a very dangerous situation. So dangerous that it has huge repercussions in his life and Sophia’s.

Sophia is head strong and has big emotional swings. She is a devoted wife, then not. She takes the ton by storm which was surprising since she at first had no desire to be in their company. Her background is too easily dismissed by the aristocracy. She like Nathan rushes headlong into bad situations. Sophia is naive about her relationship with Nathan and her expectations initially with him were unrealistic. She expected him to mirror her feelings immediately.

I just could not find a lot to enjoy in this novel. There are a few good scenes (especially well written are Nathan’s inner musings) but there were too many scenes where the leads acted irrationally or fool hearty.

Book 2 of this series tells the story of Nathaniel Ellison, the Duke of Scarsdale, and Miss Sophie Vane. I found this story to be a very emotional read, because Nathan's character is that of a tortured soul and does not believe in love as he never received love from his own mother. Sophie is a strong woman who has also not experienced love from her abusive father. She sacrifices much for her younger half-brother and has plans to free themselves from their very bad situation. Through a series of events Nathan and Sophia meet and their lives are forever changed. Can either one of them find the love that they so richly deserve? Fate seems to be against them. I found myself rooting very hard for them, but will they prevail?

This story is wonderfully emotional and has some unexpected twists and turns that will have you reading into the wee hours of the night. It is a complex and very well-written story that will have you on the edge of your seat as you wonder what will happen next. Will these two people get their HEA? Read this story and find out! You will not be disappointed, because the characters are amazing and the story is enthralling! Highly recommended!!!
This was a solid 5 stars because I cared for the H/h almost from the start. Both their lives were tragic, and made them stronger. I did have to suspend belief because he was a Duke and she a tavern gal. But, because I liked them individually, I tossed that aside and tried to enjoy the story, which I did until the end.

Don't get me wrong, we do get a very bumpy road to HEA and you wonder if you are really reading a romance story because it seems their lives are heading in different directions. Where I almost gave up reading was about the 80% mark. Granted our h is lied too, but her actions seemed so out of character. I understand she was feeling hurt and revengeful, but it made me think less of her. The homecoming our H received tugged at my heart and all he went through to survive and be with his wife, it was hard to read for me.

We do get lovemaking outside of marriage at first and mildly descriptive. The Lord's name is used in vain several times, so be warned.

No cliffhanger, no cheating and I am not going into the premise, as many have explained it better than I can. This can be a stand alone. (ljb)
I liked the characters. Nathaniel Ellison, Marquess of Deering, the fifth Duke of Scarsdale grew up with a mentally abusive mother. Sophia Vane grew up with a physically and mentally abusive father. But the hero and heroine had different outlooks on life. Sophia was a hopeful and believed in love. Nathan has a cold hearted and cynical view. After their marriage, Nathan started feeling his heart warming up again. Then he gets kidnapped and is frequently tortured as his heart overflows with his love for Sophia. On the other hand, Sophia is fed lies about Nathan betraying her and she turns hard and cold. It's so cruel how Nathan is finally free, and comes home to a terrible home coming. Then the heroine becomes so melodramatic and filled with angst, it annoyed me.
